AR Rahman's Biography: His Early Life, Musical Journey, and Achievements

AR Rahman was born as AS Dileep Kumar on January 6th, 1967, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He was born into a musical family, as his father RK Shekhar was a prominent Tamil musician who composed scores for the Malayalam film industry. Rahman began learning piano at the age of four and assisted his father in his studio. His father died when he was nine years old, and he had to support his family by playing piano professionally. He dropped out of school, but received a scholarship to study at Trinity College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in Western classical music.

In 1988, he converted to Islam after a sister's recovery from a serious illness, and changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman. He grew bored with playing in bands and decided to focus on creating advertising jingles. He wrote more than 300 jingles and won an award for his work on a coffee advertisement. In 1991, he met Bollywood film director Mani Ratnam, who asked him to compose music for his film Roja. This marked his debut as a film composer, and the soundtrack became a huge hit. He went on to score music for many other films by Mani Ratnam, such as Bombay (1995), Dil Se (1998), Alaipayuthey (2000), Guru (2007), and Raavan (2010).
